Bed Guide

Base Options

Platform Top
Platform bases contain no springs. As the mattress rests on a solid platform it provides a firmer foundation. The choice of mattress will determine the degree of support required.

Sprung Edge
A sprung edge base features a complete spring unit on top of a base which provides supreme comfort and also extends the life of the mattress. A sprung edge base will soften the feel of even a very firm mattress.

Firm Edge
The spring system on a firm edge base is contained within a surrounding timber frame, which gives the base a firmer feel. Firm edge bases are supplied with 6" legs and castors.

Slatted
In the wooden bedstead collection, slatted bases support the mattress. These slats offer additional support to the mattress and also increase air circulation around the mattrress.

Sprung slatted
All of the metal bedsteads feature sprung slatted bases for superior support.

Mattress Options

Open Coil
Standard mattresses generally consist of an open coil spring unit. This spring system consists of a large number of individual springs connected together into one single spring unit. This means that the springs act as one complete spring, so that pressure applied to one spring affects those around it. To create a firm or softer mattress, different spring gauges are used. A different gauge spring (i.e. thicker) will result in a different firmness to the entire mattress.

Pocket Spring
A pocket spring mattress incorporates individual springs, instead of the one unit used in open coil mattresses. Each spring is situated in it's own 'pocket' of fabric and are not connected to each other. This means that each bed user is supported individually by the springs that they force pressure on and are not affected by pressure on other parts of the bed.

Memory Foam
Also known as Visco Elastic Foam, Memory foam was originally developed by NASA for use in the space programme. Memory foams important characteristic is it's ability to mould to the exact shape of your body. As well as this, it also operates as a fantastic insulator. On a cold, winter night there is no better option than a memory foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses are usually coupled with a regular spring system (open coil or pocket spring) and feature a layer of foam on top of the springs.

Latex Foam
Similar to memory foam, latex mattresses mould to the shape of your body. Although latex mattress don't insulate as well as memory foam, they do retain less heat during the summer, meaning a more comfortable sleep on those hot, humid nights. Another popular aspect of latex mattresses is the anti-allergenic nature, perfect for anyone sensitive to allergies in standard beds.

Standard
For mattresses that are offered in more than one tension, standard is the default mattress selection. The specifications are included in the description.

Firm
Mattresses that are offered as firm are advised for customers who are specifically looking for a firmer feel mattress, with more resistance to pressure. Some mattresses are available in both standard and firm tensions, though the majority of firm mattresses are specifically designed as an individual range. Firm mattresses usually contain 'Ortho' in the products name, to signify that the mattress has been orthopaedically designed for firmer back support.

To view the firm mattresses or divans we can offer, simply select the relevant category and desired size, then select the 'Firm' option under the 'Tension' drop-down box in the search refinement area.

Soft
For people who prefer a softer feel mattress, we do offer a range of mattresses on the softer end of the spectrum. These mattresses are not recommended for anyone suffering from any kind of back pain. Instead, a more supportive, firmer mattress is preferred.

Zipped / Zip and Link
Zipped mattresses allow for two single mattresses to be zipped together to create a double. This is usually an option on guest beds, where the underbed can be zipped together with the main mattress, to provide guests with a spacious double mattress. This is also an option on selected divan beds.

If you wish to discover if your desired bed is capable of being zipped, or for a list of which manufacturers offer this service, please contact our friendly customer service team on 01202 854890.

Connecting Clips
Connecting clips are an option on selected divans and base only products. The clips come in a number of forms, dependant on the manufacturer, and offer a similar service to zipping. Unlike zipping, connecting clips are only used to connect divan bases. For mattress connecting, zipping is the only option.

If you wish to discover if your desired bed can be attached with connecting clips, or for a list of which manufacturers offer this service, please contact our friendly customer service team on 01202 854890.

Storage Options

Standard Drawers
The standard pull-out drawers that are offered as options on almost every divan base.

Continental Drawers
Most divan beds come with an option of selecting continental drawers. These come as a reduced size compared to regular drawers, in order to allow for any bedside furniture that is placed on either side of the head of the bed.

Sliding Door
These offer the same storage space as drawers, but operate a sliding door along the divan base instead of the standard pull-out drawers. This type of storage is especially useful if space around the side of the bed is limited.

Ottoman
The perfect option for where space is at a premium. Ottoman divans incorporate a lifting mechanism to raise the mattress up, leaving the entirety of the base for storage. This provides substantially more storage than conventional drawers, as well as not requiring excess empty space around the bed.
